WHO IS

MAMA IXCACAO

BLACK GOLD

CACAO IN LEGEND & HISTORY

Archeological evidence shows that Cacao medicine has been used by the Mayans, Zapotec, Olmec and Aztecs dating back 3900-5300 years.  The medicinal use of cacao, or chocolate, both as a primary remedy and as a vehicle to deliver other medicines, originated in the New World and diffused to Europe in the mid 1500s.

Theobroma cacao has served many functions, used primarily as a source of food. Mayans Aztecs were known to have used it for its medicinal benefits. According to the Mayan and Mexica religions, cacao had divine origins. Cacao was discovered by the gods in a mountain that also contained other delectable foods to be used by the Maya. The god Sovereign Plumed Serpent gave cacao to the Maya after humans were created from maize by divine grandmother goddess Xmucane. In a similar creation story, the Mexica (Aztec) god Quetzalcoatl (also called Plumed or Feathered Serpent) discovered cacao in a mountain filled with other plant foods.

South American civilisations have been said to have traded it as currency. When the Spaniards discovered its value they called it “Black Gold’ ‘oro negro’ & seeds of gold ‘pepe de oro’’.

IXCACAO

HEALER & MASTER PLANT SPIRIT TEACHER

Grown in pods attached to the trunk of the Theobroma tree, the Olmecs recognized that there was more than met the eye to this peculiar plant. As they cracked open the pod to reveal a sweet, gelatinous pulp, they took more notice of the seeds within the milky substance, and began to process those seeds to create the very first iteration of cacao, or “kakawa”. Theobroma Cacao literally means ‘Food of the Gods, Thea (god), Broma (food), with the Maya word Ka’kau.’ Cacao contains theobromine which provides slight stimulation that increases meditative focus. Cacao stimulates the production of oxytocin, the hormone normally created through human touch. Cacao gives us an inner warmth and feeling of self-love through this hormone, as well as providing a boost in serotonin and dopamine. Cacao also contains “anandamide,” a rarer hormone that is only ever produced in large quantities in the process of being born and in giving birth. Some people theorize that for this reason cacao is a powerful tool in “re-birthing.”

Cacao is a powerful plant teacher that works as a partner rather than a leader. The Spirit of the Cacao is a Master Plant Teacher and is also known as the Cacao Goddess. She is gentle and nurturing, but at the same time an incredibly powerful healer.
